The Warrandyte Berry Farm was started in 1977 by the Dipietro family as a hobby and as far as hobbies go, this one has become quite a bit more serious since then.
The Dipietros grow the rare sweet chandler variety of strawberry, which makes it idealfor homemade naturally flavoured ice cream and sauces. The berries are smaller than the large bland varieties you find in the supermarket chains and while you have to eat more of them, Nellie, the family matriarch, says it’s all about the taste and that you won’t find a sweeter strawberry!
Warrandyte Berry Farm sells most kind of berries, including raspberries, blackberries, boysenberries, loganberries, youngberries and more, but only when they are in season so they are ripe and at their peak. Some seasons for berries last only a couple of weeks so it pays to plan ahead if you want to sample some of the rarer varieties.
The Berry Farm is open seven days during daylight hours. Simply drive up the hill and visit the small shop around the back and you will be met with a smile, a good story and a range of other fresh produce such as farm fresh freerange eggs, jams and preserves and locally grown hydroponic tomatoes. Heavenly Honey made from local bee hives is well worth a try, as are the Yilleen preserves, fresh lemons and other fruits in season such as the large kiwi fruit that are on offer in October.
So if you’re driving to or from the Yarra Valley, deviate slightly along the Warrandyte Ringwood Road and you will have no trouble finding this little gem. On the weekend the food stall van is usually open out front. Treat yourself to a tub of natural strawberry ice cream, it truly is divine!
